How did the Olympic Games in Beijing influence the Baltic Dry Index?
Currently, there is great swell up in the global shipping market. Due China’s decreasing demand for steel, the daily rental prices for cape vessels collapsed. The decrease is mainly caused by Chinese steel producers. Factories, closed temporarily before the Olympic Games in order to cease the pollution, have still not been reopened. As a result, the iron ore stocks are at record heights and are slowing down demands. During the summer of 2008 the Baltic Dry Index was at about 12.000 points and during the beginning of the last quarter of 2008 the Baltic Dry Index is below 2.000 points; a drop of over 80%.
